"i didn't want to stand in a queue, but he said foot traffic was blocked across the bridge. "how crazy is this? you can't even get out of the city.'' other commuters described waiting in queues for up to 45 minutes before buses arrived.  power out for 3000 damage caused by strong winds left more than 3000 homes and businesses in sydney's northern suburbs without power, an energy australia spokeswoman said. it was believed the suburbs of hornsby, berowra and pennant hills were affected, with berowra heights being the hardest hit, the spokeswoman said. a fallen tree has blocked bobbin head road at ku-ring-gai, and lights are out on sunnyholt road, parklea, and pennant hills road, carlingford. lines are down on o'riordan street in mascot, closing both northbound lanes. the state emergency service has received a high number of calls since the winds began, and are expecting more as people return home from work. "we've received close to 300 requests for assistance in the past 24 hours, most of these relate to wind bringing down trees and branches on powerlines, homes and fences,'' an ses spokesman, phil campbell, said. he estimated up to a third of these calls involved damage to houses. energy crews were this afternoon working on restoring supply and energy australia asked customers in other areas without power to call 131 388. the national parks and wildlife service has recommended people postpone country travel until the conditions improve. winds hit act and queensland winds averaging 65kmh, with gusts over 90kmh, are hitting alpine areas of the southern tablelands, south west slopes and the australian capital territory. blizzard conditions are expected in these areas. a forecaster with the bureau of meteorology, jane golding, said gale-force winds will lash all of nsw until sunset tonight, at which point they will begin to move out to sea. "we've got quite a deep low pressure system in the tasman and another moving through victoria today. because they're so deep, they have quite strong winds feeding into them,'' she said. "as those low systems move away from nsw to the east, and they're also weakening as they move, the winds will ease.'' most areas of nsw should see some relief before they go to bed, except a couple of districts north of the hunter, where winds could continue until 10am tomorrow. a revised weather warning is expected to be issued by 11pm tonight. strong winds have also caused power outages across queensland's southeast. energy provider energex today said around 9000 homes and businesses lost power after trees and branches were blown onto powerlines by wind gusts of up to 90kmh. worst hit areas included ipswich and surrounding areas, caboolture and the gold coast hinterland. powerlines had also been brought down in the brisbane suburbs of herston and logan. the ses can be contacted on 132 500. - with dylan welch, ben cubby and aap email print normal font large font when news happens: send photos, videos & tip-offs to 0424 sms smh (+61 424 767 764), or var hidename = "scoop";var hidedomain = "smh.com.au";document.write("email"); us. pick up a good habit this new year- subscribe now to save 32% sponsored links latest related coverage photos: drama on the bridge 1183351353586-smh.com.auhttp://www.smh.com.au/news/national/winds-cause-commuter-chaos/2007/07/05/1183351353586.htmlsmh.com.auaap2007-07-05winds cause commuter chaoserik jensennationalhttp://www.smh.com.au/ffximage/2007/07/05/dsc00084_wideweb__470x352,0.jpgdrama on the harbour bridge ... after powerlines came down, stopping a train and forcing its evacuation.470352allister mcnultyhttp://www.smh.com.au/ffximage/2007/07/05/th_train_index-thumb__60x40.jpg6040andrew meareshttp://www.smh.com.au/ffximage/2007/07/05/dsc00084_syndicated__430x322.jpgdrama on the harbour bridge ... after powerlines came down, stopping a train and forcing its evacuation.470352allister mcnultyhttp://www.smh.com.au/ffximage/2007/07/05/th_train_mobile__240x160.jpg6040andrew meareshttp://www.smh.com.au/photogallery/2007/07/05/1183351360509.htmldrama on the bridgetext/html-gallery home | national | world | opinion | business | technology | sport | entertainment classifieds jobs | real estate | cars | dating | place a classified ad sitemap | subscribe | privacy | contact us | conditions | member agreement | copyright © 2007. the sydney morning herald. news breaking news national world opinion blogs letters strange but true stay in touch column 8 weather specialreports obituaries archives home entertainment film tv & radio music arts books good living what's on blogs entertainment » life & style people fashion parenting health diet relationships beauty house & home pets bridal life & style » business market data money portfolio quotes business network executive style business » sport league hq afl realfooty swimming golf football tennis cricket basketball motorsport horse racing rugby heaven blogs sport » travel australia world activities & interests short breaks deals & bookings travel » tech gadgets games @home biztech security connectivity techtips tech » other sections the sun-herald education radar employment property motoring video earth watch photo galleries crosswords smh shop contact us site map classifieds place an ad adonline announcements notices other classifieds advertise with us classifieds » jobs find a job place an ad cars cars for sale sell your car news and reviews bikes and scooters real estate buy property sell property rent property share property property data new developments commercial property holiday rentals businesses for sale place an ad domain newspaper rsvp find a date browse for a date top 100 rsvp.com.au search smh: today's national coverage 'i heard screaming' rudd to shake up national security inflation war may push rates up again discovered: 300 who died alone some are winners, some losers in land tax lottery speaker's corner deal for howard boulevard bears scars of history's flow prosecutor caught with child porn walks out of jail it's easier to move up down under jail rate for burglary highest in world greyhound trainer charged over dehydrated dog's death national index boulevard bears scars it seems we have always been marching on oxford street. icy work may hold key data collected from drilling into centuries-old ice reveals a crucial history. biggles leads the charge world war ii comes to life in these colourful comic-book compendiums. life in two parts the story of yehudi menuhin's talented sister has finally been told. a very royal connection what happened when socialist king billy bragg met the queen?
